Developing the Community

As a public research university, Florida International University is vested in helping both local and global communities thrive. Working with community leaders and influential enterprise, FIU works to help bring fresh, new ideas to fruition. Many of these new initiatives come from young minds, and as communities grow, so do the needs of effective education.

To help support local initiatives, FIU has partnered with Miami-Dade Public School Systems (MDCPS) to form two programs:

ACCESS

Achieving Community Collaboration in Education and Student Success (ACCESS) is an achievement-oriented partnership focused on improving student learning. Designed with the goal of providing students with high-quality public education, Project ACCESS has established 19 different task forces responsible for the improvement and creation of specific functions within the education system.

Project ACCESS places FIU in a unique position to provide K-12 students the opportunity to receive an education involving college-level research and resources.

The Education Effect

The Education Effect, a university-community school partnership centered on educational achievement in Liberty City. Formerly considered one of Florida’s “dropout factories” in a city plagued by crime and poverty, Miami Northwestern Senior High School has transformed to a "B" school, from a "D"/"F" grade, as a result of a strong partnership with FIU.

In 2011, FIU received a $1 million grant from JP Morgan Chase Foundation to fund a comprehensive program at MNW that includes the projects such as an aquaponics lab and community garden, service-learning opportunities, dual enrollment expansion, the Panther for a Day program at FIU and financial literacy workshops.
